Productivity

Simple things like making your bed, practicing a little daily meditation, and meal planning has the ability to declutter our minds – eliminating potential stress before it happens. See some more tasks below that may increase productivity and decrease anxiety.

Get outside

Take a stroll around the block, walk the kids to school instead of drive, or get in a quick jaunt at lunch. Fresh air and sunshine will give you boost of energy and a little much needed motivation.

Prep!

Get the kids (and your) lunches ready the evening before so the morning routine is less rushed. Set out homework so it’s not forgotten and check the calendar for any scheduled school events or appointments. You can ever go so far to lay out yours (and the kids) outfits for the following day!

Clean daily

Waking up to a mess in the kitchen or unfolded laundry can start the day off on the wrong foot. Take time at the end of each day to do the dishes, sweep the floor, and tidy high traffic areas. This instantly removes a little bit of stress for the following morning!

Quality Time

Both family and work life is mostly built – and maintained – on habits. Even though habits are often passed down through tradition, a little routine refresh can introduce new beliefs. Plus, revive the stale same-old same-old!

Get the kids involved

Quite often, kids can be starved for attention – or downright bored – conveniently when you are trying to get shit done. Instead of dismissing their angst – get them to help! Kids love to clean and cook with mom and dad. Give them some small tasks to do independently (if they are old enough) in order to occupy their time – and help you get through your to-do list that much quicker.

Bedtime routine

Most families enlisted a bedtime routine beginning at a young age. Snuggling up to read a book or two with your littles can be enjoyable and relaxing for all. Once your kids get older though, they’re less dependent on mom and dad and can head to bed on their own – leaving the parental units to some much needed alone time!

Make the most of each day

They weren’t kidding when they said the early bird gets the worm! Getting up before the fam gives mama a chance to enjoy a cup of coffee in peace and prepare for the day before everyone else wakes up. That little bit of solitude can sometimes be the only alone time mama gets!

The difference between self care and basic needs

Women especially tend to take care of their basic needs the majority of the time and often neglect making time to refuel and recharge through the essential – and intentional act of self care.

The following examples do not qualify as self care:

  • Taking a shower or bath
  • Washing and blow-drying your hair
  • Heading to the grocery store alone
  • Eating dinner or drinking coffee while it’s hot
  • Using the washroom by yourself
  • Needing a day of rest when you’re actually sick

Fulfilling our basic needs does not constitute self care. So, here are a few hacks for mom to get the self care she so richly needs and deserves.

Schedule it

Sit down and make a plan. Discuss your plans with your spouse or support system and mark that bitch on the calendar. No one can pour from an empty cup, right?!

Make a commitment

Join a gym, arrange a date with some girlfriends, or make an appointment at a spa. Setting a date confirms the pledge to do what you have agreed to. There’s no backing out or cancelling!

Set boundaries

For those instances where you cannot simply get away from obligations, setting some firm boundaries can act as a kind of self care relief. Separating your personal and professional life is critical. Let your work family know that you are not available until after a certain time on weekday mornings. That way you don’t have to rush (and in turn stress) through your morning routine.
