Realistic New Year’s Resolutions

The days of 2025 are quickly running out and 2026 will be here before you know it. Got your resolutions firmed up yet? Do you even care? TBH, this mama isn’t really stressing about it. Some folks, though, are pretty adamant on setting and hopefully keeping at least a few “promises” for the upcoming year. Here are some realistic New Year’s resolutions in case you you’re interested.

Family

Most of us can use a little brush up on our family interactions and communications. Whether it’s planning a summer bbq or sending a long distance niece a “what’s happening with you” email – prioritizing family is important.

  • Make more of an effort to touch base with those family members you don’t see too often. Even a quick DM is often enough to remind a loved one that you are thinking of them.
  • Plan some fun outings with the kiddos. Go to a concert or take a mini vacay.
  • Spend less time on devices and connect IRL for a change. Maybe even enjoy some time outdoors (scary)!
  • Have a conversation with your kids. Like, really talk to them and find out what’s up in their lives lately.

Health

This is one of the most popular types of resolution – with one of the highest failure rates. Being conscious of setting practical intentions is important in order to succeed.

  • Get your body moving. Not running a marathon, but just setting your body in motion. Get the family in on this too!
  • Cut back on drinking a bit. Maybe only enjoy a cocktail on weekends or special occasions.
  • Go to bed an hour earlier and improve your sleep.
  • Turn off the television and pick up a good book.
  • Adopt a simple skincare routine. Not to frilly.

Personal

When it comes to realistic New Year’s resolutions – working on one’s self is (or should be) the number one priority. We can’t pour from an empty cup, mamas!

  • If you’d like to lose a few pounds, do some research and make sensible changes and expectations.
  • Follow your passion. Start that business or side hustle you’ve been contemplating, launch the blog you’ve researched, or take the leap and go back to school.
  • Set up that finance budget you’ve been thinking about.
  • Make time for yourself. It’s not selfish. It’s self care.

What are my realistic New Year’s resolutions?

Well, let’s share and set our intentions right here, right now! First off, this mama plans to remain alcohol free. That term was chosen because “sober” doesn’t really fit in this case. It was a choice made mainly for health reasons about four months ago.

Secondly, some lifestyle changes are necessary in 2026. Enough with the excuses! Bring on the action! For this intention to be successful (fingers crossed), there needs to be only minor changes in daily habits.

  • Wear the Fitbit. The little reminders to get up after sitting for an hour are super helpful for adding a little movement throughout the day.
  • Just walk it out. A moderate walk a few nights a week will help to break up the slow evenings.
  • Mindful eating. Snacking is my nemesis!

And lastly, keep on top of health issues. It seems, health wise, that when it rains it pours – especially for women. Advocating for one’s own health is so very important. In the end, there may be nothing wrong. But in the event there’s something that needs to be addressed – at least the right steps were taken to get ahead of the storm.

What are your New Year’s resolutions? Are you setting any for yourself? Or are you winging it in 2026?!
