Ten Cold Weather Wardrobe Essentials

Whether we choose to accept it or not, the cold weather has already begun. By now most Canadians have fired up their furnace and have broken out the cozy blankets and comfy cardigans. It goes without saying that, living in Canada, we’re prepared to the unpredictable weather systems mother nature will undoubtedly throw at us. But in case you need a refresher, here are ten cold weather wardrobe essentials one needs in order to be warm and comfortable.

Toque & Mittens

This really goes without saying! One needs an abundance of beanies, gloves, mitts, and ear muffs in order to keep warm and dry in the crappy wet and cold weather of Fall & Winter. Even as I’m writing this (on October 24th) we’ve seen folks about town in their winter hats and gloves already. Cool mornings especially have already arrived and one has to be prepared. Stock up on these cold weather basics. We often buy these simple essentials, such as mini mitts & simple beanies, at the Dollar Store! Inexpensive, surprisingly stylish, and less costly to replace when they get lost or ruined.

Sweaters

Goes with saying right?! Having an abundance of knits, turtlenecks, and crew neck styles on hand makes getting ready on a frigid AM a breeze. Make note though, many days may start out cool and frosty, but warm up later in the afternoon. Layering may be a good idea until the dreaded white stuff arrives (and stays).

Boots

Prepare for both fashionable and functional! We women often have at least a few style of boots at any given time. Short booties, tall riding boots, easy Blundstone or Doc Martens – in a variety of colours, patterns, and materials. Since most days are wet and chilly, why not keep your tootsies warm and toasty. Be sure to choose and style with durable and slip resistant soles. Don’t want to slip!

Also, be sure to invest in a suitable pair of winter boots. Take it from me – you do not want to end up with permanent damage to your toes after frostbite. It was my youth! I made mistakes! But I also learned from them and now I dress appropriately for the winter season. Besides, winter boots have come a long way and are really quite fashionable!

Scarves

Scarves are another no brainer! Of course, they serve an important function – to keep you warm. But scarves are also very versatile and have the amazing ability to make an outfit go from blah to bold in an instant. Shop these simple layering pieces on Amazon and your go-to clothing store – even check out the Dollar Store. I scored a couple of super soft and cozy scarves for about $4 a piece!

Loungewear

Weekends are a little less full this time of year – for the most part. Folks aren’t running around here and there, they’re setting in and enjoying relaxing time at home. What’s the point in putting together an awesome #ootd if you’re not leaving the house? Right?! Instead, stay warm and comfortable in a buttery soft lounge set. Lougewear is uber trending right now because so many people are choosing to be at home. These sets (or separates) usually consist of jogger or legging type bottoms (shorts in summer) and a comfy-casual top. Get some!

Fleece & Sherpa

These soft, downy materials have come a long way and a lot of styles and trends are coming back. Those fleece half zip pullovers you wore in high school? Let’s hope you kept those! The casual-comfy-athleisure trend is super popular right now! And honestly, designers and fashion labels are creating really cool pieces with these cozy materials! Sherpa bomber jackets, fleece pea coats and full zip coats, and warm fleece joggers are all the rage. It seems that comfort is now stylish! Who knew?!

Shacket

A shacket is mixture of the word shirt and jacket. It is a shirt with long jacket sleeves, a hood, and fabric that has the thickness of a jacket. It doesn’t have a zipper in which most jackets have that why shirt is part of the word.

Need I say more. But, honestly, these are the perfect layering piece. Throw on a pair of leggings, a basic tee or tank, and a warm and stylish shacket. The longer styles are really nice – kind of like a coatigan! Surprisingly, I’ve had a shacket for many years! Check it out!

Bombers & Blazers

Most women I know feel that jackets are a huge staple in their wardrobe – any time of the year! Any type of jackets – bombers, blazers, denim, vests, leather – has the ability to add visual interest to an outfit. What else are they good for?

  • Layering. Again, temperatures this time of year are up and down. Be prepared for cooler mornings and they shed the layer when the mercury rises a little in the afternoon.
  • Creating a hint of illusion. A jacket can hide what some women may be ashamed to show off. Though one should never be ashamed of their body, a jacket can provide a little self confidence.
  • Structure. A jacket can turn a blah pair of jeans and poplin button down into a workplace statement. Corporate heads will turn when you dress for the job you want.

Long Winter Coat

Maybe this is a little weird and TMI, but I have a strong desire for an outdoor coat to cover my butt! Am I alone in this? Blowing snow and driving rains can put a damper in anyone’s day – literally. Having a water resistant and insulated winter jacket is a must! We even invested in a similar jacket for our nine year-old daughter last year. Walking often to and from school and work exposes us to the elements and arriving warm and dry is really important.

Leggings

Leggings were a trend that took a while for me to get into. They were something that seemed too easy and not stylish – boy was I wrong! After buying my first pair of Lululemon Align leggings, I was hooked. Worth every penny and so versatile. Legging can be worn in place of tights with a dress or skirt, go great with a long tunic-type shirt, and are incredibly warm and comfortable. Coming from someone who sits all day for work, leggings are a godsend.

So, I sincerely hope this list of ten cold weather wardrobe essentials gave your inspo. Maybe even reminded you to go shopping for some much needed cold weather gear.
