An Average Woman’s Beauty Bag

I don’t pretend to be anyone special. I’m just a plain forty year-old Canadian woman trying to get through the day looking a little better than when I rolled out of bed in the morning.

For the past few years, I’ve invested more in my beauty regimen and tried products that I may not have in my late twenties or early thirties.

Though I may not be an influencer or overly unique – I am a consumer. So my opinions may matter to the manufacturers whose products I use on a regular basis (maybe they care a bit anyways).

About three or four years ago, I made my first purchase from Sephora and since using higher quality products, I don’t buy the cheaper stuff anymore (no offense).

Since learning more about my ever-changing skincare needs, I’ve only really purchased what was suited to my skin type – which ranges from combination to sensitive.

Growing up I was never really taught about taking care of my skin. I had to try different products to see what worked and what was an epic failure. I’m beginning to teach my daughter now about how to care for her skin in the future. Washing, sunscreen, removing makeup before bed, and moisturizer when it’s needed.

Is seven years-old too early to learn good skin care?? I don’t think so!

This is my skincare and makeup routine – an average woman’s beauty regimen.

Cleansing is important morning and night – I’ve learned that the hard way! Even if I’m tired or in a rush, I always cleanse at the beginning and end of the day.

I’ve jumped on the probiotic skincare bandwagon! The current cleanser I’m using is a Purifying Face Cleanser by Tula Probiotic Skincare. It’s cleans deep, isn’t over-drying, and is easy on my sometimes sensitive skin.

After cleansing, I apply a refreshing toner. I recently purchased Thayer’s Witch Hazel Facial Toner in Rose Petal on Amazon.ca. This alcohol free toner doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight, gently moisturizes, and the scent is to die for. When in a rush for cleansing (it happens), I will use this toner to remove my makeup at the end of the day.

My moisturizer changes because I get samples and try new products quite often. I recently tried a Drunk Elephant day cream, which I loved! But after seeing the price I decided against buying it. I love the high end products, but sometimes I need to be realistic and not spend nearly $100 on a face cream.

Recently, I finished a bottle of Boscia Green Tea Oil Free Moisturizer. I really liked it! Lightweight and absorbed well. Didn’t leave my skin with a greasy feeling before applying my makeup. I really appreciated the bottle it came in. A pump that really cleans out the contents so it doesn’t feel like there’s any waste.

Even though I don’t wear a lot of makeup, I do need concealer daily to mask my dark under-eye circles. I can’t say enough good things about Too Faced Born This Way Concealer! Blends beautifully, covers flawlessly, and a little goes a long way.

I’m loving tinted moisturizers and BB creams right now! Extra moisture and a hit of colour to balance out my skin tone. My go-to product right now is Urban Environment Tinted UV Protector SPF 43 by Shiseido. Goes on smooth and covers just enough. I’m always a little red after my shower and this cream comes to the rescue. The added SPF is a must in any season!

Mascara is, of course, in every girl’s makeup bag! I’ve found a favourite that I use exclusively on a daily basis. Benefit Roller Lash Mascara is, by far, my favourite mascara. It is not water proof and that’s what I want. I was loosing eyelashes when using the water proof variety so I had to switch. This beauty gem doesn’t clump and the brush doesn’t get gunky and gross. The mascara is easily removed when I was my face at night.

I only recently started using a brow pencil. I was getting my brows tinted, but the colour only lasted a short while and I still had to fill in my brows since they are so sparse. Another Benefit product, Precisely My Eyebrow Brow Pencil, is awesome! A retractable pencil to fill in your brows and then a brush to blend! Perfect!

This highlighting stick by Nude By Nature gives my cheeks a hint of dewy colour. I also use this on my eyes! This convenient product is cruelty-free, come in four shades to suit your skin tone and blends beautifully. Nude by Nature is a makeup line that is made of naturally derived ingredients. No nasty chemicals!

Lipstick is not something I wear often and if I do it’s not worn for long. As soon as I eat or drink anything my lips get cakey and I have to wipe it off. I do, however, like to wear lip balm of some sort. My fav of the moment is EOS Organic Stick Lip Balm in Strawberry Sorbet. This slick stick doesn’t leave my lips feeling sticky or get all gunked up. Just soft soothing moisture, free of all the crap you don’t want on your lips!

For removing the day from my skin before bed, I just use the same cleanser and toner that I use in the morning. No need for extra unnecessary products.

However, after removing my makeup and washing my face at the end of the day, my skin needs a little extra moisture.

Again, with a probiotic skincare product, comes Nayelle Probiotic Anti-Aging Night Cream. This cream is a bit thicker and provides my skin with a deeper moisturizing, but is still not too heavy on my face. The fact that Nayelle is Canadian and their product line contains naturally derived ingredients is a plus in my books!

That’s it folks! My daily skincare and makeup bag is pretty basic! I do occasionally use bronzer, eye shadow, lipstick, facial masks, exfoliants and other products. But, for the most part, I’m a pretty low maintenance girl.

What’s in your beauty bag??
