I’m really putting forth a solid effort to become more of a morning person, but the transition is not going well! Morning hours really don’t agree with me. But, then again, neither do the evening hours! So, when it comes to physical activity, it begs to question – morning or evening workouts?

I am a person who really needs my sleep!
Waking to start the day I’m dragging ass and need coffee – like ASAP! Evenings I’m tired, yet still dragging ass in order to tidy the kitchen, get our daughter to bed, and try to carve in a little alone time – just me and the TV!
Couple time is pretty well non-existent! With the hours my husband works, he’s sleeping on the couch by 7pm. It’s a fun mission to wake him in order to get what I need! 😉
I’m steadily incorporating workouts back into my weekly routine. I’m trying to be realistic and not go balls-to-the-wall, over do it, and fall off the wagon!
Just a couple days a week, to start, and then gradually adding from there. That’s not too much to ask!
In the mountains (digital mountains) of articles I’ve read on the best time of day to exercise, MORNING seemed to be the clear winner!
There are super uplifting benefits to a morning sweat session:
- Motivation to increase your productivity (Score at the office!)
- More quality family time in the evenings
- Improved mental focus & decreased anxiety (Self-care is priority)
- You may consume less unnecessary calories – Related Post: Diet should be a four-letter word
- Burn more fat
- Lower blood pressure and decreased risk of disease
- More active throughout the day
- Better sleep (Like I said, I need my sleep)
- Build muscle more efficiently
After reading countless posts, articles, magazines, and websites I had a question.
Would evening workouts not yield the same results?
I discovered an article in Shape Magazine discussing morning vs. evening workouts. Find it here.
Basically, there are advantages to exercising during both times of the day. Essentially, it’s up to you and what works best for YOU! There is no one-size-fits-all in workout scheduling – do it when you can!
Fitness professionals have debated this topic up the wazoo and both hold merit. But ultimately – what does it matter?!!
I’ve tried to workout in the mornings and I’ve tried countless tips that I’ve found online to attempt to get me moving in the AM.
- Wearing workout clothes to bed (ready to rock!)
- No snooze – getting up when the alarm first sounds
- Splashing cold water on my face
- Lemon water as soon as I get up
- Coffee, coffee, coffee
- Leaving out my weights so I trip over them
- Including my daughter to make it fun
None of these tidbits worked! So I’ve switched my focus to the evenings, which has benefits all it’s own.
- Stress relief (We all have stress!)
- Accountability (Schedule a trainer)
- Safety (No work rush traffic during your runs!)
- Less tiredness (Equals less risk of injury)
- Night runs (need I say more!) Check out the latest style from So, morning or evening workouts? I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no right or wrong time to exercise.

May 9, 2021 at 10:12 pmI totally agree the timing isn’t ever going to be perfect. What’s most important is finding out what works for a person’s personal rhythm and then having the consistency of workouts. Love that you’ve tried working out with your daughter to keep things fun 🙂

May 10, 2021 at 2:59 pmThank you Alison! Making time for physical activity – any time of the day – is all that matters. We recently bought our daughter a Fitbit and we have little competitions to see who can log the most steps! Making exercise fun, I think, is important!
