Non-Traditional Thanksgiving Meal Ideas

Who says Thanksgiving dinner has to consist of roasted turkey, potatoes, and stuffing?! Even though my family enjoys the classic holiday meals we do like to change things up a little sometimes! Here are a few non-traditional Thanksgiving meal ideas for those who enjoy a break from convention.

First off, the term “meal” is being used here, because folks will host their holiday feast at any time of day – not necessarily at supper time. We, as a family, hold our chow time any time between 11am and 5pm. Mind you this is not usually my optimal eating time, but whatever!

As for what said meal consists of – my family will usually cook the same old boring turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, carrots, peas, and have an array of bland pies for dessert! It’s not that I’m balking at traditions, but eating (basically) the same meal at every fucking holiday gathering can get a little bit mundane to say the least! Right?!

So why not change the menu a little?!

Let’s say you’re holding your meal at a normal dinner hour – let’s go with 6pm! Setting a meal time at a regular meal time allows for some kick-ass appetizers to make an appearance.

Fun Starters!

Folks love a good dip or some finger foods while mingling and catching up with family and friends. These crowd-pleasers will surely be a hit! Serving a punch or cocktails (or mocktails) isn’t a must, but can certainly be a nice touch!

The Main Event!

The main course at a special event or holiday does not need to follow any specific rules or guidelines (food restrictions aside). Having a little fun with the menu and being a bit adventurous and creative can make for a really memorable Thanksgiving!

May I suggest, however, that you try out said menu items prior to the big day instead of just winging it. Get all the groceries you may need and cook a “trial-run” of any new recipes a week or two before the scheduled meal. This gives you a chance to tweek the recipe – or nix it altogether – and helps to avoid any stress while family is present.

Save Room for Dessert!

Now I know pumpkin is traditional for Thanksgiving – but does it have to be pie?! Pumpkin is such a versatile ingredient and is delicious in other desserts besides a basic pie. Try something a touch out of the norm this year!
