Kids – well, mine anyway – are constantly asking for stuff! Sugary treats, an array of toys that they play with once and then never touch again, and endless passing fads. One of the latest things my daughter has been asking for are fidgets. So, parents, let’s get some answers to the burning questions – WTF are fidgets and why does my kid want them??

In general terms, fidget toys are used to help a child to focus, pay attention, and promote a sense of calm within themselves. These toys come in many different forms and can be used to assist in a child’s attention span and in turn can help kids with learning. Some examples are pop-its, infinity cubes, stress balls, and the ever popular fidget spinner.
Schools are beginning to use fidgets in the classroom to assist in anxiety and promote relaxation in their students. Teens and adults are also reporting that playing with a fidget helped to reduce stress. These toys are also known to assist in improving motor function and coordination in children. Even though fidgets are promoted for children with attention issues, these toys can be enjoyed by children of all ages – and adults.
In my daughter’s case, she wanted a fidget – a pop-it specifically – of her own because her friends had them! They were all she talked about and all (mostly) she wanted. So I finally found an affordable pop-it and surprised her with it! But, it can’t stop at just one, she needed more! Now the search was on for a variety of fun – and affordable – fidgets!
Where can you find fidgets?
Funny enough, these toys really are everywhere, when you pay attention for them. We’ve had luck at Walmart, Dollar Tree, Dollarama, and even our local variety store! Amazon (per below) has a huge assortment of fidget toys! There’s something for every age, taste, and personality.

Another place where I had success was Shein. I was browsing the home section and came across an abundance of pop-its, spinners, and other fidgets. The best part, from a parent’s perspective, was the price. It was unbeatable! One needs to keep in mind that the toys come from overseas and often the colour or specific style cannot be selected. But for about $30 I got my daughter a shit tonne of fidgets that should last until the fad wears off!

WTF are Fidgets? Now we all know!
Who knows how long this recent infatuation will last. Next week there will like be another hot new toy on the market that all the kids will just have to have! But those too will fade and become old news (hello, LOL dolls!). It begs the question of whether or not fidgets really are calming and stress-reducing in kids – and adults. All I can confirm is that the room gets a whole lot quieter when the “fidgeting” starts! From a mother’s perspective, all I can say is “aahhhh, silence”.
