We, as adults, often have a stack of books ready and waiting to be delved into. Regularly, we browse the best-sellers list for the latest and greatest novels to add to our collection. But what about our children’s reading material? Here is a list of suggested books to add to your kids reading list!

My daughter will be nine this week and has taken a real liking to reading in the past few months. Since her reading comprehension has improved so well in the last while, she shows a great deal of interest in chapter books.
Personally, we haven’t visited our local library, nor any bookstores, since the pandemic hit a year ago. But since most retailers have reopened, I’ve had the opportunity to shop at our community thrift store. I often purchase gently used books (and a slew of other items) for myself and have started building my daughter’s book collection at the same time.
Through school, friends, and television, my growing girl has been introduced to many collections, genres, and informative books. She honestly loves a little bit of everything! From sci-fi to fantasy, comic books to instructional learning – even non-fiction resource publications.
I am so happy she enjoys reading!
The Monster High and Ever After High novels speak to my nine year-old’s demographic on a number of levels! I know this because I often read these books to her at bedtime! Personally, I get a strong sense of belonging, friendship, and diversity within the characters of both of theses series.
Whatever After is a bestselling series that follows a tween girl and her little brother as they go on fairy tale adventures through a magic portal in their house! These stories truly are fun! The classic fairy tales referenced in these adventures bring back memories of my own childhood.
Dork Diaries is another diary style book with fun illustrations and doodles! These stories follow the young life of Nikki. An eighth grader experiencing her first love, revolving friendships, and sibling troubles! The target aged reader for this series is 9-12, but older children would enjoy these reads all the same!
A good read that both boys and girls will enjoy!
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is another book series that teaches impressionable children about values, how to be a good friend, and touches on the trials and tribulations of growing up.
Thea Stilton and Geronimo Stilton are a courageous brother/sister mouse duo who take their young readers on an incredible adventure with each fun fantasy! These books kinda read like a comic book with numerous graphics, fun facts, and back story additives that grasp a child’s interest and attention. These books are really fun!
Don’t forget the classics!
Originally we borrowed Little House on the Prairie from our local library. My daughter loved it so much that I bought it for her for Christmas this past year. We are currently reading this book at bedtime and are almost finished! We watch a fair amount of history in our household. I feel that is why she enjoys this book so much – it’s rich is historical facts and reference!
Anything by E.B White is a must read for children – and adults! Charlotte’s Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan are literary classics! I started with Charlotte’s Web when my daughter was too young to read it herself. Reading at bedtime until she was asleep – and not putting the book down until well after she was dreaming! Though I haven’t acquired any of these must-have novels for her collection, I will be in the near future.
Roald Dahl is the author of my favourite booking growing up – James and the Giant Peach! I bought the Roald Dahl collection below for my daughter for Christmas this past year, but TBH I think I was more excited about the new books than she was!

Of course, my little girl likes Matilda, BFG, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory best – mainly due to the movie productions! After explaining to her that the book is always ten times better than the movie, her interest in the written version grew more and more!
This kids reading list compilation cannot be complete without mentioning The Brothers Grimm fairy tales. I love these original versions of all the classic and timeless stories I grew up reading!
A gentle word of caution though! These are not the nice, sugar-coated adaptation of stories like Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel & Gretel! The Brothers Grimm authentic fairy tales are quite graphic and paint a slightly different picture than what we may remember from our younger years!

March 10, 2021 at 12:08 pmI’m happy your daughter as embraced reading, I often wonder if my dislike of reading could have been avoided if my dyslexia had been identified during my childhood, rather than in my 30s
