For The Love of Reading

Sitting down with a good book is like taking a solo road trip to a place you’ve never been. A story puts the reader in someone else’s shoes and gives them a brief glimpse into another world. Some simply read to relax, to escape, and to take of break from screen time. Real bookworms and die-hard readers dive into a book simply for the love of reading.

As with most hobbies, past-times, and treasured collections – quite a bit of money can be spent amassing – whatever it is you’re into! The same goes for reading! Books can cost a fair bit of coin! Especially for something you may only peruse once!

“I do believe something magical can happen when you read a good book.”

Luckily, there are many more affordable ways of acquiring your reading material. Here are a few suggestions for stockpiling your assortment of awaiting adventures (in print)!

Library

Kind of an obvious option here! Why pay for you reading selections when you can borrow until your heart’s content! Three weeks to get through a literary adventure should be enough time (though you can renew if you’re not quite finished)! The big plus here?! If you don’t like the story or can’t get into the plot – just return the book early and get another one!

Fall Family Activities

Our local library branches hold an annual book sale for those titles that are outdated or slightly damaged. This is a great way to build your child’s book collection for a fraction of the price – which is usually by donation.

Yard Sales or Flea Markets

People often don’t keep every book they’ve read. Books take up a fair bit of space if you have accumulated enough. So, why not unload the I’ve-read-it-pile so another reader can enjoy?!! Bundle, barter, and bag yourself some new reads!

Used Book Stores

There is a little store just off the square in Goderich that I like to visit every now and again – The Book Peddler. I can always find a gently used book by a favourite author in this shop for a reasonable price. Though you may pay a bit more at a used book store than through a yard sale, the selection is more current and in better condition. #supportlocal

Thrift Stores

A visit to the thrift store always leads to a purchase of some sort or other (for me anyways)! One of the easiest and most frequent score can be books! Just a couple of days ago I managed to snag two new-to-me reads for just $0.50 each! Can’t get much better than that!

Share With A Friend or Neighbour

Recommendations of good reads coming from a friend are the best! Usually because they already have a copy of said good read! Enjoy the book and return it or pass it on to another – and keep the train going! Split the cost of the book or take turns buying.

Find The Sale Section

Retailers such as Indigo, Coles, and Amazon often have a discount or clearance section – both online and in store. One can buy brand new books at a much lower price – albeit not the newest titles.

No matter how or where you get your books – whether to borrow or buy – enjoy the adventure that each read takes you on just for the love of reading. Happy reading!
