Our Top 5 Fishing Spots Close to Home

My family loves to fish! More so, myself and my husband, but our daughter has shown a lot of interest as well – mainly because we take her fishing so often! Luckily, we live near Lake Huron and many inland lakes and rivers, so finding a spot to cast a line is not too hard.

Here are a few of our favourite fishing spots where we are (pretty well) guaranteed to catch something!

Bayfield

Bayfield River

This picturesque town located on the Lake Huron shoreline is a hot spot in early summer for Small Mouth Bass. We are fortunate enough to be only a twenty minute drive from one of our top go-to fishing locales. The Bayfield Marina was our spot to fish for bass, pike, carp, catfish, trout, and the occasional long-nose gar. But since undergoing construction this year, we are unable to try our luck there. However, the Bayfield River runs into Lake Huron, so we can try there as well. We fished the river a couple of months ago and another angler caught a nice walleye just before we arrived. Mostly, we just fish of the pier in Bayfield. On a recent visit, I was lucky enough to be the only one to catch anything! A nice smallie! I haven’t lost my touch!

Goderich Harbour

My husband fishing at the mouth of the Maitland River

We were accustomed to fishing out of a boat in the Goderich Harbour, but we sold our Nitro when our daughter was just a few months old. We’d like to purchase another, but for now we are stuck on shore! This year, unfortunately, the water levels rose significantly. So fishing from shore is even a challenge! When the conditions are right, many species of fish can be caught here. From small and large mouth bass, to carp and northern pike – Goderich Harbour is a sports fisherman’s (or woman’s) paradise.

Morrison Dam Conservation Area

My husband and daughter fishing at the Morrison Dam

A few years after my husband sold his boat, I bought him a fishing kayak for his birthday. I know, it’s a far cry from a Nitro bass boat, but it’s better than nothing! The Morrison Dam Conservation Area is only about a ten minute drive from our house and hubby often goes there with his kayak to try his luck with a few buckets (large mouth bass)! We often visit this resevoir as a family to catch a few bass, crappie, carp, northern pike, and even trout at the right time of year. Kids don’t need to travel far, nor do they need to catch anything substantial in order to have a good time.

Silver Lake

My man’s big smallie from Silver Lake

Growing up, I lived close to this lake, so we have fished this smaller in-land lake often. There is not much public access, but a small cottage and camping resort, Silver Lake Tent and Trailer Park, is a great place to stay if you want to make a weekend (or a week) long trip out of it. We’ve had incredible luck here! Small Mouth Bass, Large Mouth Bass, Northern Pike, Perch, Walleye, and lots of pan fish for the kiddos! A few years ago, my husband landed (and photographed for evidence) a hefty Smallie weighing in just over seven pounds!

Lake Wawanosh Conservation Area

Wawanosh Conservation Area

This is a man-made lake, but an angler can still have a successful day of fishing nonetheless! This hidden body of water does not allow gas-powered motors, so be prepared to paddle or come with battery-operated power. We haven’t taken our daughter here yet, but my husband and I have had success here in the past. Northern Pike, Large Mouth Bass, Small Mouth Bass, and an abundance of pan fish!

So, if you’re in Southwestern Ontario and looking for a few places to cast a line. Check out these areas and try your luck at catching a lunker!
